High-tech meets local & sustainable food

If you don't know what that odd symbol at left is, you probably don't have a phone or tablet or index finger implant that will scan it. But for those of you who do scan these codes wherever they appear nowadays, this one takes you straight to the Enright Ridge CSA website, where you can find out more about our community-supported urban agriculture project, get an application for membership this year, and see why the Enright Urban Farm Project is a pretty cool idea, right here in Price Hill.

The symbol is a QR code (I now know that QR stands for "Quick Response"), a two-dimensional matrix code that is readable by QR scanners, mobile phones with a camera, and smartphones. It doesn't do a lot of good here on our blog, but we'll use it in other places in coming months, such as flyers and displays that will help us get the word out about what we are doing at the Enright Ridge CSA as we encourage new people to sign up for the 2012 season.

For now, it's just a cool graphic to go with this blog entry, but I suppose if you wanted to try it, you could scan it from the screen and go to our website. Where there is a new direct link to the blog at the top left of every page--so you could get sucked into a never-ending circle, going back and forth from website to blog to website to . . . well, that's enough technology for today.

We’d like everyone who’s been involved with the Enright CSA as shareholders to join us for this afternoon of planning, brainstorming, and envisioning the changes and improvements we’d like to see as we continue forward. We want to know how we can improve what we’re doing, enlarge our membership, and in general, decide what we’d like to see happen in the next 3 to 5 years with the CSA. Apples & Corn

The harvest on Saturday included apples and corn, both welcome. However, they weren't grown at the Enright CSA. We don't have any apple trees yet (but give us time); they were from an orchard in Bridgetown. And corn requires a lot of space, so maybe when we get some more growing space we can grown our own. But it's nice that we are able to support other local farms by buying some produce to add to the shares a few times a year.

I had some of the corn in a bean dip at a party at fellow CSA member Tina Michel's house on Saturday night, and I will admit to picking up the last kernels on my plate with my fingers when my tortilla chips were gone, it was so tasty. I noticed that another young CSA member enjoyed her corn straight from the cob. (Thanks for sharing that photo, Michael Frazier!) I had an apple for breakfast this morning, and it was great, too, crisp and sharply sweet.

It was altogether a beautiful share this week, with the first of the peppers (the purple peppers are almost too pretty to eat--almost), a tomato, and even an eggplant on the share table. I think it's been our most colorful share so far, and it made a feast for the eyes, set out for pickup (good job, team) even before we all took it home to cook up a few feasts for the table.
